When is a planet not a planet? ~ Ronald Anderson

In 1930 the first Kuiper belt object was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory. This object was given the name Pluto and was considered to be the ninth planet from the sun.

The landscape of the solar system began to change in 1992 with the discovery by David Jewitt and Jane Luu from the university of Hawaii of the first of more than 1000 now known objects orbiting beyond Neptune. These objects are labelled as Trans-Neptunian Objects.

Moving on to 2003 another object was found, designated as 2003 UB313. This object was larger than Pluto. The discovery of 2003 UB313 caused much academic commotion (and still does).

This talk is about some of the events that resulted in  Pluto "God of the underworld and Judge of the Dead, son of Saturn" being ignominiously relegated to a dwarf planet.
